- Michael Elliot
When I read this it immediately caught my attention, after I thought about it for a second and realized that it is very true. This world is not perfect there is a lot of evil and films shouldn't avoid reality. Yeah, sometimes they take it to far but not all films with violence are to much. War movies are usually pretty accurate and they really show you what it was like during that time, we as Christians should not watch these movies just because they are showing us the truth. I think they are a good lesson in the brutality of some real world things and are an eye opener to us as people.
“The violence of Saving Private Ryan…is clearly part of the central story. Pretending that war is some nice, clean, heroic endeavor creates more problems than it solves. Jurassic Park III … is about the conflict between the humans and the animals. Violence is an integral part of nature and the world that God created. Retreating into a kind of spiritual ‘Amish-ness’ on the subjects of violence, nudity, or profanity ensures that we are incapable of dealing with it in real life, and equally incapable of instructing our children.”
- Jay Phillippi
Again the point is made that violence is the sad reality of this world, ignoring it and pretending that is really not as bad as what it really is would be a lie. You cant dumb down movies to make them seem better when the reality is they need to be this brutal and gory in order for your emotions to be put into these types of movies.
“It kept me from experiencing the film because I was so perpetually horrified that he would let such an untrained, vulnerable mind be exposed to such graphic violence, such chaos and noise. Like food, some films are suitable for young audiences to ’stomach’ while others require more maturity, more discernment, more understanding of what a work is ’saying.’”
- Bill Romanowski
I think what he is saying in this is very true, some stuff is to much to handle for an audience. Saving Private Ryan is to strong and to much of an emotional film for younger audiences and violence should only be watched by the people that are mature enough to handle and and old enough to realize that they can not reflect what they see on the film in real life.
I can see points on both sides but I personally have to side with violence. It is a part of this world and it cant be one of those things that is over looked and is protected against forever because even the most sheltered kid will experience some sort of violence in there early years. I know what your thinking and no i don't think a three year old kid should be watching Saving Private Ryan. Parents need to allow them to see those kinds of movies when they are old enough. I think ignoring violence is ignoring a very big part of everyones life today, its all around us and we shouldn't take it lightly but we shouldn't band it from films either.
